"Bone spur" is a general term used to describe a knobby, abnormal bone growth. Bone spurs are also known as osteophytes. Scientists believe bone spurs occur because of osteoarthritis or when the body tries to heal itself after a trauma by replacing bone. The growth is usually small and often undetected.

Although bone spurs can form on any bone, they usually occur on joints where two bones come together, or where ligaments or tendons attach to bones. Areas that tend to develop bone spurs are the neck, shoulders, elbows, spine, hips, knees and heels. Spurs are not painful but they can cause pain, if they rub on a nerve or other tissue.

Older adults are more prone to developing bone spurs, but spurs can occur in young athletes or dancers because of the added stress on their muscles, ligaments and tendons. Pain may occur while the spur is forming but can subside. In some cases, pain may persist and interfere with physical activity.

These are reasons to see your health care provider about a bone spur:
You discover an abnormal growth
You experience pain associated with the growth.
You experience pain or weakness at a joint.
You have difficulty walking because of pain in the knees or heel.
Your doctor may prescribe rest, anti-inflammatory drugs or physical therapy if the spur is creating problems for you. These non-invasive treatments usually are effective in treating the bone spur.

In rare instances, surgery may be recommended if the spur is creating serious physical problems, such as prohibiting walking, and the spur is not responding to other forms of treatment.

How is the ankle designed, and what is theankle's
function?
The ankle isa "hinged" joint capable of moving the foot in two primary directions: away fromthe body (plantar flexion) and toward the body (dorsiflexion). It is formed bythe meeting of three bones. The end of the shinbone of the leg (tibia) and asmall bone in the leg (fibula) meet a large bone in the foot, called the talus,to form the ankle. The end of the shinbone (tibia) forms the inner portion ofthe ankle, while the end of the fibula forms the outer portion of the ankle. Thehard, bony knobs on each side of the ankle are called the malleoli. These providestability to the ankle joints, which function as weight-bearing joints for thebody during standing and walking.

Ligaments on each side of the ankle also provide
stability by tightly strapping the outside of the ankle (lateral
malleolus) with the lateral collateral ligaments and the inner
portion of the ankle (medial malleolus) with the medial collateral
ligaments. The ankle joint is surrounded by a fibrous joint capsule.
Tendons that attach the large muscles of the leg to the foot
wrap around the ankle both from the front and behind. The large
tendon (Achilles tendon) of the calf muscle passes behind
the ankle and attaches at the back of the heel. A large tendon
of the leg muscle (posterior tibial tendon) passes behind the
medial malleolus. The peroneal tendon passes behind the lateral
malleolus to attach into the foot.

The normal ankle has the ability to move the foot,
from the neutral right-angle position to approximately 45 degrees
of plantar flexion and to approximately 20 degrees of dorsiflexion.
The powerful muscles that move the ankle are located in the front
and back portions of the leg. These muscles contract and relax
during walking.

5 Efficient Methods To Soothe Foot Bunion Pain | Sports Medicine & Orthopedic Center

Bunions refer to a bone or soft tissue deformity characterized be reoccurring pain and inflammation. In spite of the fact that it looks like a plain bump at the base of the toe or the side of the foot, the condition is actually more complex, particularly when the prominence forces the big toe to angle towards the other toes and leads to an orthopedic condition known as hallux valgus.

If you dread the idea of wearing wide toe shoes, then you could consider having your favorite shoes stretched at a shoe shop.
Soak your problematic foot
More often than not, you can reduce the pain caused by an inflamed bunion by soaking your foot in a clean basin. Add a few tablespoons of salt in lukewarm water - or cold water if it's summer - and simply soak your feet in the mix for 5 to 15 minutes to relieve pain.
Perform some stretching exercises
Stretching exercises are usually very effective in addressing certain sores and can do wonders in alleviating pain caused by bunions. The next time you start to experience pain, try stretching your big toe gently away from the other toes and hold it in that position for approximately 30 seconds. Repeat this exercise a few times and you should notice the painful sensation diminish. On a side note, if the pain gets worse with each repetition then, you should stop immediately.
Use a bunion relief device
If the traditional methods described above fail to provide pain relief, then consider trying one of the many bunion relief devices available on the market. This will result in pain and possibly swelling. The pain is especially noticeable when you push off with your toes while walking. Since this movement stretches the already injured portion of the fascia. Without treatment the pain will usually spread around the heel. The pain is usually centeredat a location just in front of the heel toward the arch. This results in the development of a heel spur.

Stretches for plantar fasciitis requires holding onto a countertop or table and squatting down slowly with the knees bent. The heels of both feet must be kept in contact with the floor while squatting. After 10 seconds, straighten up and relax. The stretch is felt as the heels start to raise off the ground. Repeat this exercise 15-20 times. Stretching the Achilles tendon requires leaning into a wall. Place one leg back behind the other leg. Keep the back knee straight with the heel on the ground while bending the front knee. Again, after 10 seconds, straighten up and relax. Repeat this exercise 15-20 times with both legs.

Most people experience pain on the heel when they wake up in the morning and begin to walk. There is less pain and stiffness after a while; however, the pain may increase during the day. The pain can occur when you stand or sit for a long time too. The illness is caused when there is strain on the ligament that provides support to the arch. Tiny ligament tears are caused when there are repeated strains resulting in swelling and pain. Continued stretching of the plantar fascia can result in heel spur which is a bone-like development on the heel. Flat feet or high arches can be a cause.

An easy home exercise for plantar fasciitis involves the use of a tennis ball or any small ball that is comfortable to use on the bottom of the foot. The exercise is performed by placing the bottom of the foot on top of the ball and gently rolling the ball back and forth. This is thought to massage the muscles and stretch the muscles along the sole of the foot to relieve tension. This can be performed while seated or standing while holding on the a wall or chair. The exercise can be performed for 30 seconds to a minute at a time followed by a period of rest. plantar fasciitis brace

This constricts and thereby shortens the gastroc complex, worsening the condition. A heating pad placed under the muscles of the calf for a few minutes prior to rising may help loosen tension, increase circulation in the lower leg and reduce pain. Also during sleep, a night splint may be used in order to hold the ankle joint in a neutral position.

Night splints usually are designed to keep a person's ankle in a neutral position overnight. Most individuals naturally sleep with the feet plantar-flexed, a position that causes the plantar fascia to be in a foreshortened position. A night dorsiflexion splint allows passive stretching of the calf and the plantar fascia during sleep. Theoretically, it also allows any healing to take place while the plantar fascia is in an elongated position, thus creating less tension with the first step in the morning. A night splint can be molded from plaster or fiberglass casting material or may be a prefabricated, commercially produced plastic brace ( Figure 8 )

Plantar Fasciitis is a rather common condition of the foot causing significant heel pain and proximal foot arch pain. The most common presentation of plantar fasciitis is when a patient experiences pain with their first step in the morning. This initial step incurs the most pain that the patient will feel throughout the day, but there will be continual pain in those who suffer from plantar fasciitis Typically people describe the pain as relating to the sensation of walking on glass. These initial steps incur tremendous pain near the proximal aspect of their foot where the plantar fascia inserts into the heel bone.

I then begin to send healing energy to the affected area of pain, in this case the heel of your foot. I send the energy for about 20 minutes and then ask you for your pain level again. Most of my client notice a pain reduction anywhere from 20-30% in the first twenty minutes. We repeat this process another two times in the course of the hour healing session until the pain level is zero or greatly reduced to a much more comfortable level. RICE The acronym RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) is used to remind people of the four basic elements of immediate treatment for an injured foot. People should get off injured feet as soon as possible (Rest). Ice is particularly important to reduce swelling and promote recovery during the first forty-eight hours. A bag or towel containing ice should be wrapped around the injured area on a repetitive cycle of 20 minutes on, 40 minutes off (Ice). More often than not small toe pain, may be related to bone fracture or broken bone. You will have to check the alignment of a toe to check, if there are any changes in the alignment. Trauma, caused due to dropping a heavy object on the toes or due to repeated Flat Feet pressure or stress on the toes and there is misalignment, it is recommended, that a physician be consulted. In case the bone is broken, it is imperative that the bone is set in its place, else it can impede the bone's ability to heal properly.

The blood must be released to relieve the pressure. Some people will tell you that you can do this yourself with a razor blade or a hot needle, which you poke through the skin. That takes guts; you're probably better off seeing a doctor to take care of it. If you don't take care of it in the first couple of weeks, the nail will probably start to come off, and several weeks later it will ultimately drop off. Briefly: After originally being slated for an awards season release last year, The Weinstein Company decided to delay Grace of Monaco starring Nicole Kidman to a March 14th release this year instead. However, Variety now reports the film is being taken off the release calendar yet again, and The Weinstein Company will unveil it at Cannes instead. However, the trade sites that director Olivier Dahan has been clashing publicly with the production company over the biopic over "unreasonable cuts," which should sound familiar to anyone awaiting the release of Bong Joon-ho's Snowpiercer. The film had already seen a teaser trailer released last year, but now it seems we''ll be waiting even longer before we see the film. Stay tuned.

Muramasa's Uprising of the Oone Resistance DLC detailed - Destructoid




Muramasa: Rebirth is set to have four side stories arrive in the form of DLC, and they all seem to be pretty meaty diversions. America just got its first, The Fishy Tales of Nekomata, and the second has just dropped in Japan, titled Uprising of the Oone Resistance.

We previously caught a trailer for the DLC, but now, Siliconera has some more details on how it plays out. First off you'll play as Gonbei, a simple farmer (gonbei means "country folk" in Japanese), the hardest worker in his village. After the death of his wife, he speaks to her in the form of her ghost, who will help him attack enemies during the DLC (creepy).

He'll fight with a sickle, bamboo spear, and a hoe, and he has the opportunity to summon the "village idiot" and the "village strongman" in combat. Just like the first DLC Gonbei will have a skill tree as well as a boss rush mode, and multiple endings.

If it's anything like the first DLC, I'm in. Expect a review once it hits North America.
